The Governing Council of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has appointed Professor Christian Agyare as the next Vice-Chancellor of the university.
His appointment takes effect from August 1, 2026, following approval at the university’s 292nd Special Governing Council meeting held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
Professor Agyare becomes the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the Kumasi-based institution since its establishment in 1951. He will succeed Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, whose four-year term ends on July 31, 2026.
His appointment marks another major step in a career that has spanned more than two decades in teaching, research and university administration at KNUST.
Currently serving as Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Agyare is widely recognised within academic and pharmaceutical research circles for his contributions to scientific research, institutional development and higher education leadership.
A Professor of Pharmaceutical Microbiology, he has built an international reputation through his research in antimicrobial resistance, ethnopharmacology, wound healing and anticancer drug discovery.
Over the years, he has published more than 200 peer-reviewed academic papers, earning thousands of citations in international scientific journals.
Professor Agyare began his academic journey at KNUST, where he obtained both his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in pharmacy before pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Münster.
He later undertook postdoctoral and research assignments in the United States, including engagements at Novartis/Seeding Labs in Boston and the University of California, San Francisco.
His research work has attracted more than $11 million in international funding from institutions including the German Research Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service, the Mastercard Foundation and the World Bank.
The funding has supported scientific collaboration, research development and institutional capacity-building at KNUST.
Within the university, Professor Agyare has held several leadership positions and played a significant role in planning and quality assurance reforms.
Between 2016 and 2020, he headed KNUST’s Quality Assurance and Planning Unit, where he led the introduction of digital systems aimed at strengthening accountability, staff assessment and academic supervision.
One of the major initiatives introduced during that period was a multipurpose smart identification card system that combined biometric verification, access control and financial transaction functions for both staff and students.
Since assuming office as Provost of the College of Health Sciences in 2020, he has overseen the introduction of new academic programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, while also supervising infrastructure expansion projects and increased student enrolment within the college.
Beyond Ghana, Professor Agyare has contributed to quality assurance work in higher education across Africa and has served as an international quality assurance expert for the Namibia Council for Higher Education.
He has also been recognised for supporting mentorship and gender inclusion in science and academia.
Professor Agyare is a Fellow of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Foundation and has consistently advocated greater opportunities for women pursuing careers in scientific research and higher education.
A former student of Prempeh College, he is also a practising pharmacist and an active member of the Methodist Church Ghana.
He is married to Dr Charlotte Sena Agyare, and they have three children.
Professor Agyare assumes office at a time when KNUST continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Africa’s leading science and technology universities, with increasing focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, research and global competitiveness.
